The Olvian Funeral Cover Index
Every quarter we publish what people actually asked for when they requested funeral cover through Olvian: the cover amounts they chose, what they said they could pay each month, who they wanted to cover, and how that differs by province and by age. The figures are anonymised and aggregated; no individual request can be identified. Nothing in the index is a price from an insurer. It is a picture of demand, published so that families, journalists and researchers have a public number to work with.
How to read the index
- "Requested cover" is what people asked for on the form, not what they bought.
- "Monthly budget" is the band people said they could comfortably pay, not a premium.
- Province figures are shown only where at least 200 requests exist for the quarter, so that no small area can be identified.
- Each edition is dated and kept online. Citations are welcome; please link to the edition, not the page.
Method
The index counts completed, consented requests for funeral cover in the quarter, removes duplicates and test data, and reports medians and ranges by province, by who is covered, and by the age band of the main member. Requests that opted out are excluded. The first edition uses a seeded table from public price lists until a full quarter of data exists, and says so at the top.
Editions
The first edition covers the quarter in which Olvian opens to the public and will be published within a month of that quarter closing: one row per quarter with the headline figure and a download link.
The current edition
The index has no quarter of live data yet. The table below shows the seeded ranges from public price lists, dated September 2026, next to the columns that will carry real medians from the first quarter. Nothing here is a premium from an insurer.

The rand figures on this page are seeded estimates from public undertaker price lists and municipal cemetery tariffs, dated September 2026, to be replaced by the Olvian Funeral Cover Index once a full quarter of data exists and to be verified before publication.
